The Collection
GILARDINO - FRIGNANI
The collection of guitars that belonged to Maestro Angelo Gilardino is the result of a selection that lasted many years, during which the maestro reconstructed stories, chased after traces, to be able to find instruments of great musical and historical significance. These are guitars by authors of the Italian school of the 1900s that the Maestro supported with great enthusiasm for their technical and acoustic qualities. Angelo has written extensively on the guitar and on the luthiers of the Italian school and has always been a curious and attentive observer as well as a profound connoisseur of the historical plots that have characterized them in the panorama of international development of both composers and performers. Particularly interesting is the in-depth study that Angelo Gilardino together with the luthier from Monferrato Mario Grimaldi proposed in the book: "Il Legno che canta" ("The wood that sings". Published by Curci of Milan the book has achieved considerable success, already reaching its second edition.
Some emblematic figures of Italian builders are represented in Angelo Gilardino's guitar collection: Luigi Mozzani, Pietro Gallinotti, Lorenzo Bellafontana and Nicola De Bonis.
These luthiers absolutely deserve to be placed next to the great Iberian luthiers whose prestige has been consecrated and alive throughout the world: the same goes for the great Italians who built magnificent guitars in times when, to the noun "guitar", the adjective "Spanish" was inextricably linked in a sort of symbiosis very similar to the cliché.
Shortly before his death, Angelo Gilardino proposed the purchase of the entire collection to Lorenzo Frignani; he was certain that the excellent luthier from Modena, renowned collector of precious and rare historical instruments, would have known how to take care of and preserve the guitars in the most appropriate and qualified way.
